Avon and Somerset Police have widened their appeal for CCTV, doorbell-camera and dashcam footage after a man suffered serious head and facial injuries during a late-night assault in Yeovil. The attacker has not been identified, and officers have not yet established the precise location of the incident.
Investigators are asking residents, drivers and witnesses to review recordings covering St John’s Road, St Michael’s Avenue and Northbrook Road. They also want footage from nearby locations between St Michael’s Avenue and Hawthorn Road, as officers continue working to establish the route taken and what happened.
What happened in Yeovil?
The victim was walking when he was attacked by an unknown assailant between 11.50pm on Saturday, 25 July, and 12.05am on Sunday, 26 July. He was taken to hospital for treatment for significant facial and head wounds.
Police said the man has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering. The investigation remains ongoing as officers try to identify the person responsible and determine exactly where the assault happened.
The wider footage appeal does not mean police have confirmed that the assault itself was recorded. Officers have not said that the attack was captured on any recording reviewed so far. They have already carried out house-to-house enquiries and examined available CCTV footage.
What footage could help police?
Recordings made late on Saturday night and during the early hours of Sunday morning could assist the investigation. Police say footage does not need to show the assault itself. Images of people, vehicles or other activity on the roads may help officers establish events and trace movements before or after the attack.
Residents with home-security systems, people using doorbell cameras and drivers whose dashcams covered the roads or surrounding areas are being asked to check their recordings. Anyone who finds potentially relevant material should preserve it and pass it to police.
Witnesses who were in the area around the time of the assault and noticed suspicious behaviour are also being urged to come forward.
