Avon and Somerset Police have widened their appeal for CCTV, doorbell-camera and dashcam footage after a man was seriously injured in a late-night assault in Yeovil. The attacker has not been identified, and officers have not yet established the precise location of the incident.

Residents, drivers and witnesses are being asked to review recordings covering St John’s Road, St Michael’s Avenue and Northbrook Road. Investigators also want footage from nearby locations between St Michael’s Avenue and Hawthorn Road as they work to establish the route taken and build a clearer picture of what happened.

What happened on the Yeovil route?

The victim was walking when he was attacked by an unknown assailant between 11.50pm on Saturday, 25 July, and 12.05am on Sunday, 26 July. He suffered significant facial and head wounds and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said the man has since been discharged and is recovering. The investigation remains ongoing, with officers trying to identify the person responsible and determine exactly where the assault took place.

The force’s wider footage appeal should not be taken to mean that police have confirmed the assault itself was recorded. Officers have not said that the attack appeared on any recording examined so far. House-to-house enquiries have already been carried out, and available CCTV footage has been reviewed.

Footage that could help

Recordings made late on Saturday night and during the early hours of Sunday morning could assist the investigation. Police say footage does not need to show the assault itself. Images of people, vehicles or other activity on the roads may help officers establish the sequence of events and trace movements before or after the attack.

  • Residents are asked to check home-security systems and doorbell cameras.
  • Drivers should review dashcam recordings covering the roads and surrounding areas.
  • Witnesses who were nearby and noticed suspicious behaviour are urged to contact police.

Anyone who finds potentially relevant material should preserve it and pass it to officers. Even footage that appears not to show the attack could help investigators understand movements along the wider Yeovil route.
