Two men have been jailed after a burglary at a home in South Street, Yeovil, during which video game consoles, cash and other items were taken. The break-in happened in the early hours of Sunday, March 22, and was captured by a doorbell camera.
Wayne Shortland, 43, from Yeovil, and Lewis Coombes, 38, from Castle Cary, were identified in connection with the burglary. The case was reported by Somerset Daily Yeovil on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
Prison sentences at Taunton Crown Court
Coombes was arrested just hours after the burglary. The court heard that he had taken two games consoles, cash and several other items that have not been recovered. He pleaded guilty at Taunton Crown Court and was sentenced to 36 months in prison.
His sentence covered burglary, theft and assault, as well as breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order and a suspended sentence.
Shortland was arrested on April 29. He pleaded guilty to burglary, motor vehicle theft and four separate shoplifting offences. He was sentenced to three years and six months in prison at Taunton Crown Court on July 10.
Police response
PC Jim Card, who handled the case, said the sentences could provide some reassurance to those affected and urged people to report incidents.
“We welcome the sentences for these prolific burglars and hope it provides some comfort to their victims. Burglary not only causes financial and sentimental loss but also significantly undermines the feeling of safety in people’s homes. We continue to urge the public to report such incidents.”
The source says the burglary resulted in both financial and sentimental loss for the victims, with some stolen property still unrecovered.
