A former Iceland supermarket in Yeovil’s Quedam Centre could be turned into an amusement arcade under plans submitted to Somerset Council.
High Score Arcades Ltd has applied to change the use of the premises at 6-8 Ivel Square to a “family entertainment centre”. Iceland closed in January, and the application says the proposed business would bring the unit back into use.
What the application proposes
The plans say the new leisure use would help attract visitors and encourage people to spend longer in Yeovil town centre. The applicant says that could benefit nearby retailers, cafés and other businesses by increasing visitor numbers and the time people spend in the area.
“Town centres continue to face challenges from changing shopping habits and the growth of online retail,” the application said.
The application describes the arcade as a way to broaden the activities available to residents and visitors, while supporting the “continued regeneration and vitality of the town centre”. It also says the business would create employment and make a “positive contribution” to the area.
Building, signage and supervision
No external alterations are proposed for the former supermarket, although signage is envisioned. The application says customer activity would take place entirely inside the building, with the premises professionally managed and supervised by staff.
“CCTV and appropriate management procedures will be in place to ensure the venue operates responsibly.”
