Yeovil Town Women’s Women’s FA Cup campaign came to an end at Alvington on Sunday as Portishead Town scored twice late on to win a hard-fought Third Qualifying Round tie.
The visitors took an early lead despite Yeovil making the brighter start. Erin Bloomfield looked a threat from the opening stages and sent an early warning shot just wide of the post from outside the penalty area.
Portishead went ahead after 20 minutes when Shannon Holloway ran on to a ball over the top. Yeovil goalkeeper Emily Hall came out to clear, but the ball struck the forward and bounced into the net.
Portishead reduced to 10 players
The game changed when Bloomfield raced into a challenge with a Portishead defender and was pulled to the ground. The referee showed a red card, leaving the visitors with 10 players.
Yeovil were unable to make the numerical advantage count immediately. Jodi Cornwall’s resulting free-kick was blocked by the wall, while her follow-up volley was kept out by an excellent save from Abi Footner.
The Glovers eventually drew level shortly after half-time. Bloomfield was brought down inside the penalty area and took responsibility from the spot, getting back to her feet before powering the penalty into the net.
Late goals end Yeovil’s cup hopes
Yeovil continued to push for a winning goal, but Portishead regained the lead through a moment of individual quality from Lilly Farr. She raced down the left before producing a fierce finish that gave Hall no chance.
With Yeovil sending players forward in search of another equaliser, Portishead struck again. A long ball found Mia Blazey, who lifted her finish over Hall to confirm the home side’s FA Cup exit.
The result ended Yeovil’s progress at the Third Qualifying Round stage. Bloomfield’s penalty was her latest contribution in a campaign that also included two goals in Yeovil’s league win at Gloucester City, according to the fixture information published with the match report.
Next fixture is local derby
Dave Court’s side will return to league action with a local derby against Sherborne Town. Sherborne are due to visit Alvington on Sunday 11 October, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.
The published fixture list also shows Yeovil’s following home league match as a double-header date on Sunday 18 October, when B2A Women and Yate Town Women are listed as visitors to Alvington Playing Fields.
