Yeovil Town continued their positive pre-season momentum with a 1-0 win over Cardiff City U21s at Huish Park on Saturday, after Stephen Walker scored inside the opening two minutes.
The forward’s third goal in as many games proved enough to settle an engaging contest, although the Glovers created several opportunities to extend their lead. Despite making numerous changes during the match, manager Billy Rowley’s squad showed attacking ambition while also protecting their clean sheet.
Walker gives Yeovil an early lead
Yeovil made an immediate impact when Walker received a pass from Brett McGavin, created space and curled a superb finish into the top corner. The early goal set the tone for a first half in which the hosts repeatedly threatened Cardiff’s defence.
Mason Obeng almost doubled the advantage after bursting forward from the left, cutting inside and shooting narrowly wide. Ryan Jones also tested Cardiff goalkeeper Jake Dennis with a low effort after cutting in from the right flank, but the goalkeeper collected it safely.
Obeng and Luke McCormick combined effectively down the left channel, although McCormick’s cross was cleared. Archie Davies then made a dynamic run that opened space for Walker, who went close to a second but struck the post.
Loick Ayina headed wide from a Jones corner, while McCormick later saw a deflected shot saved after another powerful run. Walker appeared to have scored again, but the effort was ruled out for offside. He then turned provider, setting up McCormick for a long-range attempt that went over the crossbar.
Yeovil finished the half strongly. McGavin’s curling free-kick forced Dennis into a smart save before the interval.
Cardiff threaten but Barker keeps clean sheet
Johl Powell and Slavi Spasov were introduced in the second half, with Yeovil continuing to look the more dangerous side in attack. Jones and Davies combined to create a threatening cross that Spasov narrowly failed to meet, while Jones later missed after controlling a long ball.
Cardiff grew into the game as it progressed, but Yeovil goalkeeper Jos Barker produced several important interventions. He used his feet to deny Mannie Barton and later reacted sharply to block an effort from Hayden Allmark.
Further substitutions, including the introduction of three trialists, did not reduce Yeovil’s attacking intent. Spasov’s movement inside the penalty area created a late chance for Powell, who narrowly missed.
Barker was called upon again in the closing moments, making another sharp save to deny Gabriel Keita. The intervention preserved Yeovil’s clean sheet and secured the victory.
Positive momentum ahead of the new season
The result followed Yeovil’s recent draw with Merthyr Town. Rowley had rotated his line-up for the Cardiff fixture to improve player fitness and assess different tactical options.
Walker’s continued scoring run, Yeovil’s attacking opportunities and Barker’s late saves provided encouraging signs as the squad builds towards the new season. The match also gave Rowley the chance to assess a changing group, with substitutes and three trialists featuring during the game.
