Yeovil Town began their latest pre-season test with a narrow 1-0 victory over Cardiff City Under-21s, holding on after an early Stephen Walker goal and a series of important saves from goalkeeper Jos Barker at Huish Park.
The match, played on Saturday and reported on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, saw Walker strike inside the opening two minutes. After receiving a precise pass from Brett McGavin, the forward created space before curling a shot into the top corner to give the Glovers an immediate lead.
Manager Billy Rowley made several changes to his squad as he continued assessing fitness levels and tactical options ahead of the new season. Despite the alterations, Yeovil combined attacking intent with defensive discipline during a lively and competitive game.
Yeovil create chances after rapid start
The home side threatened to extend its advantage several times. Mason Obeng’s drive from the left narrowly missed the target, while Ryan Jones tested Cardiff goalkeeper Jake Dennis with a low effort during the opening stages.
Obeng and Luke McCormick then combined effectively down Yeovil’s left, although Cardiff cleared the resulting cross. Archie Davies produced a dynamic run that created another opening for Walker, who struck the post.

Cardiff pressure brings late saves
Johl Powell and Slavi Spasov came on in the second half as Yeovil continued to look for a second goal. Jones and Davies combined to create a dangerous cross for Spasov, who could not make the ideal connection, while Jones later narrowly missed after controlling a long pass.
Cardiff increased their possession as the half progressed, putting the Yeovil defence under greater pressure. Barker responded with several crucial saves, including stops from Mannie Barton and Hayden Allmark.
Three trialists were introduced in the closing stages, but Yeovil still produced opportunities of their own. Spasov’s sharp play gave Powell a chance to shoot just wide, before Barker made the decisive late intervention to deny Gabriel Keita.
