Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley described his side’s 4-1 defeat to AFC Fylde at Huish Park as a “freak game”, after the Glovers were punished despite showing promising signs in attack.
Yeovil controlled periods of the match and reached the opposition penalty area roughly 20 times before half-time, but went into the break behind. The result leaves Rowley disappointed, although he said the performance should not be judged only by the scoreline.
A missed chance and a decisive turn
The key moment came shortly before half-time. Archie Davies hit the post from close range, but Fylde immediately broke down the other end and doubled their advantage seconds later.
Rowley said the visitors scored three goals from their first three meaningful attacks, comparing their efficiency with Yeovil’s defeat to Solihill on the final day of last season. He also acknowledged that Yeovil’s defending in transitions and counter-pressing situations was not good enough.
“There’s probably two sides of it for me, really,” Rowley told BBC Somerset’s Chris Spittles after the match. “There’s the side where I felt like some of our defensive stuff, particularly in transitions and counter-pressing moments—wasn’t great… But the second part, I actually just think it was a bit of a freak game.”
The manager felt the match could have taken a very different direction had Davies’ effort gone in. A 1-1 scoreline before the interval, he suggested, would have changed the mood inside Huish Park and given Yeovil a stronger platform for the second half.
“That would have made the game, 1-1 just before half time, we would have had a positive team talk, the fans would have been on our side and we’d probably go on to win the game. “That’s football, you go down the other end, it goes 2-0 and it’s very different, a slightly steeper hill to climb.”
Centre-back injuries add to Yeovil frustration
The defeat was compounded by injuries to both starting centre-backs. Ben Radcliffe was forced off at half-time, while Joy Mukena was substituted during the second half after feeling tightness in his hamstrings.
Rowley said he hoped Mukena’s withdrawal was precautionary and planned to speak to both players after the game to assess the seriousness of their injuries.
“I’m hoping that Joy was just a precaution with his hamstring,” Rowley explained. “I’ll go catch up with those two lads now and hopefully they’re not too serious.”
Luke McCormick gave Yeovil brief hope of a comeback when he pulled a goal back in the 75th minute to make it 3-1. Fylde responded with a swift counter-attack and scored a fourth to secure all three points.
Yeovil turn attention to Aldershot
With two games scheduled in less than a week, beginning on Tuesday night, Rowley said the senior players had already helped rally the squad. Midfielder Brett McGavin was among those involved as the group prepared to focus on recovering and responding.
Yeovil were due to return on Sunday to begin the recovery process, review the defeat and prepare for training on Monday before the next match.
“We’ve got a game Tuesday. We’ll obviously be really disappointed for the next 24 hours. We’ll review, we’ll improve, we’ll recover tomorrow, train on Monday, and then we’ll go and try to put the record straight.”
