Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley praised his side’s ruthless attacking display after the Glovers swept aside Boston United 6-0, but his post-match comments also left Luke McCormick’s position at the club uncertain.
Speaking to BBC Somerset’s Ian Randall after the match, Rowley said Yeovil had turned a relatively even contest into a decisive victory after the opening goal. The Glovers then scored four times in a frantic 12-minute spell, effectively settling the contest before half-time.
Four goals in 12 minutes
Rowley said he had urged his players to maintain their intensity rather than protect their lead. He was particularly pleased that the team added a third goal before the interval, describing 2-0 as an uncomfortable scoreline for the side in front.
“I thought the game was actually relatively even until the first goal goes in,” Rowley explained. “And obviously, the football phrase is ‘the floodgates opened’ a little bit. Sometimes these things just happen. Everything we were touching Brett [McGavin’s] obviously done unbelievable for his goal.”
He added that the message to his players was to continue attacking throughout the match.
“I was kind of trying to say to the lads, ‘Let’s get another goal before halftime here. Let’s not rest on that, let’s try and keep the energy and keep playing forward.’ We all know 2–0 in football is an annoying scoreline really for the team that’s winning. So I was really pleased it ended up going three. The message for the boys was at no point give up on trying to score.”
Yeovil’s substitutes also helped preserve the team’s momentum in the second half. Rowley said the players introduced from the bench kept the energy high while helping the team pursue both a clean sheet and further goals.
“I’m really happy for all the subs that came on the pitch. I thought they were really instrumental in keeping the right energy and vibe,” Rowley said. “The message for the lads coming on was, ‘let’s keep a clean sheet and let’s keep trying to score.’ I think they did an exceptional job at that.”
Oseni welcomed to Huish Park
Before kick-off, Yeovil announced the signing of forward Owen Oseni. Rowley said he was delighted to bring the 22-year-old to Huish Park and praised his development, aerial ability and goalscoring threat.
“I’m a huge fan of Owen. I’ve seen him progress all the way from step six,” Rowley noted. “He’s an exceptional talent, a very unique player. He’s unbelievable in the air, his spring’s great, his timing’s good, and he can obviously score goals. We’re really, really happy to have him in.”
McCormick absence explained
The post-match interview also addressed the absence of key player Luke McCormick. Rowley said the pair had experienced an internal dispute and indicated that McCormick is not currently available for selection.
“I’m never going to stand here and talk badly about any player, but the truth is Luke and I had a bit of a dispute,” Rowley revealed. “My job for this club and the dressing room is to always do what I think is best for the team, and at the moment he won’t be playing for me.”
Asked whether McCormick could play for Yeovil again, Rowley did not rule it out completely, but gave no indication that a return was imminent.
“We’ll have to see, but at the moment, probably not.”
