Yeovil Town’s first home match of the new season ended in a heavy 4-1 defeat against AFC Fylde at Huish Park on Saturday 12th September.

The Glovers had been trying to respond to a 3-2 loss at Southend United the previous weekend, but a disciplined and attacking Fylde side controlled long periods of the game. Greg Olley scored twice, while Luca Thomas also found the net twice as the visitors turned their National League Premier Division meeting into a convincing victory.

Luke McCormick gave Yeovil a brief chance of a comeback when he scored in the 75th minute. His goal was his sixth in seven games this season, but Olley completed his own double five minutes later to settle the contest.

Fylde’s high-tempo start frustrates Yeovil

Yeovil manager Billy Rowley made three changes after the defeat at Southend. Ste Walker came into the attack in place of Slavi Spasov, while Hayden Muller was brought into midfield. Fylde began with a high-tempo approach and quickly showed that they would not sit back at Huish Park. Their midfield formed what the report described as a yellow-and-black wall, making it difficult for Yeovil to play through the centre.

The home side’s first promising opening came after 14 minutes. Ryan Jones produced a piece of skill to find Archie Davies, whose cross was cleared by the visitors with Walker waiting nearby. Fylde continued to create the clearer openings after the restart. Matthews-Lewis went through but tried to lob Yeovil goalkeeper Jos Barker, who claimed the ball. Charlie Lennon replaced Obeng after 65 minutes, and Zain Westbrooke came on for McGavin in the 71st minute. Those changes helped Yeovil find a route back into the game, but Fylde remained dangerous whenever they attacked.

McCormick offers hope before Olley restores the margin

With 15 minutes remaining, Yeovil finally reduced the deficit. Jones made an excellent run and played the ball through to McCormick, who finished from the edge of the box with what the report described as a trademark cool finish.

The goal was McCormick’s sixth of the season and briefly gave the hosts hope of an unlikely recovery. That possibility lasted only five minutes.

Olley dribbled through the Yeovil defence, rounded Barker and slotted the ball into the net to score his second goal of the afternoon. The report described the finish as skilful but criticised the ease with which the visitors had moved through the home defence.
