Children returning to St Gildas Catholic Primary School in Yeovil for the new academic year have been welcomed into a refreshed Early Years classroom, following improvements completed during the summer break.

The work included new carpets, a fresh coat of paint and renewed decking. Other areas of the school were also given a makeover before pupils returned.

St Gildas is part of the Dunstan Catholic Educational Trust. School leaders said the changes were designed to make the spaces used for learning and play feel warmer and more welcoming for children.

A renewed space for younger pupils

The Early Years classroom was highlighted as part of the school’s preparations for the new term. Headteacher Andie Bartley said the school wanted its youngest pupils to feel happy, secure and ready to learn in a stimulating environment.

“We are delighted to welcome our children back to a refreshed and welcoming Early Years classroom. Creating a warm, stimulating environment where our youngest pupils feel happy, secure and ready to learn is incredibly important to us.”

The trust said the condition and atmosphere of a learning environment can affect how children settle into school and feel about attending.

“It is wonderful to see St Gildas preparing such a welcoming environment for its youngest children as they begin the new academic year. “The learning environment plays an important role in helping children feel safe, settled and excited about coming to school.”

Improvements completed over the summer

The refurbishment was carried out while the school was closed for the summer break, allowing the updated classroom and other areas to be ready for the children’s return at the start of the new year.
