A £960,000 village hall and football changing facility planned near Yeovil has moved a step closer, with Barwick and Stoford Parish Council opening the search for a contractor.
The community facility is planned for the Recreation Ground on Whitcross, south of Yeovil. It is intended to serve residents in both Barwick and Stoford, providing a central activity hub for communities that have been without one since 2017.
What is planned at Whitcross
The development will include a village hall, football changing facilities and parking for 32 vehicles. The plans also include disabled-access facilities.
The site is close to Yeovil Junction railway station and Yeovil Showground. It is being progressed alongside an 800-home development on the Keyford site.
When could work begin?
The plan was approved by the parish council in February 2023. Construction is scheduled to start by spring 2027, with the hall targeted for completion by late 2028.
Companies within a 50-mile radius are being prioritised for the contract. Tender submissions close on 9 October, and the parish council aims to appoint the successful contractor by late autumn, with the contract award also targeted before Christmas 2026.
Proctor Watts Cole Rutter is representing the parish council on the project. The council said the community is eagerly anticipating a shared venue for local activities.
